RURAL COMMUNITY CENTERS ARE CRUCIAL TO AFGHAN RECONSTRUCTION EFFORTS

Reconstruction efforts to assist the people of Afghanistan include developing community centers in strategic locations. The Tangi Saidan Village Community Center currently offers a medical clinic. Soon it will also provide an educational and communication center along with opportunities for recreational activities.

INSTITUTE FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AT HERAT- RAISING UP A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS

After 23 years of war, Afghanistan is confronted with many challenges.  Political, social, economic, and educational infrastructures must be rebuilt.  The men and women who will lead in this challenging endeavor need ideas, skill sets, and a new mindset that will enable them to accomplish such a task.  All of these needs require competent leadership.
MIDWEST SHORT-TERM TEAM WORKS WITH MORNING STAR PROJECTS (SEPTEMBER 2004)

The Midwest short-term team from St. Joseph and Kansas City Missouri delivered a much needed computer and school supplies to the Helping Hands Vocational Center.  They also taught classes in English and told stories.  The children were shown globes and taught about the whereabouts of various countries and the globes were left with them.

FOOD DISTRIBUTION IN CHAHAR ASYAB DISTRICT (MAY 2004)

Morning Star Development and International Crisis Aid partnered recently to distribute food to 500 Afghan families.  International Crisis Aid funded the distribution and Morning Star implemented their donation. The distribution was in the Tangi Saidan area, including the 12 surrounding villages.  Many of these villages lack basic food items.

TANGI SAIDAN VILLAGE BOOK DISTRIBUTION FOR GIRLS SCHOOL  (MAY 2004)

Morning Star staff visited the Tangi Saidan Village girls school in ChaharAsyab District, Kabul and identified a need for educational supplies. The building in which they meet was badly damaged by the Taliban.  Classes continue in bombed out spaces without roofs or adequate supplies. In May a short term visiting team from Memphis, TN responded to this need by providing 2000 text books for the young women.

KABUL TAILORING PROJECT:  OUTFITTING THE AFGHAN NATIONAL ARMY (ONGOING)

Our Tailoring Project employs many Afghan widows who are the sole breadwinners for their children.  A recent local contract to produce uniforms has allowed us to employ more than 500 workers in one project alone.  Creating jobs within the local economy stabilizes families and stimulates economic growth.

CLEAN WATER WELL PROJECT UPDATE: TANGI SAIDAN VILLAGE (JULY 2004)

Through the generous contributions of International Crisis Aid, Morning Star has successfully installed a well in the village of  Qala-e-ko. The village leaders have asked for our help in restoring the existing well that would serve as the only clean source of drinking water for 1500 families living in 34 surrounding villages.
